ECU (European Currency Unit)

The ECU was founded in 1979 and was an index of foreign currency which included up to 10 European currencies. The ECU fulfilled a function of a being a monetary unit for the countries which made up the EEC (European Economic community). It was the predecessor to the euro. The ECU was used until 1999 and the currency was only in electronic form.
